Are You Prepared for the Coldest Winter in a Decade?

Are You Prepared for the Coldest Winter in a Decade?
Posted in

The scorching heat of the summer has now become a distant memory. We may have all been praying for a breeze a few months ago – now we may be facing an incredibly cold winter.

But if there’s one thing residents of the UK are good at, it’s solving weather related problems! We may complain and reminisce about better months, but we always find a way to keep going. So what can you do this winter to keep warm?

Wrap Up Warm

This may seem like an obvious solution, but it may be good to think about finding your winter gear early. The cold is due to start setting in this month, so start piling on the layers! If your coat isn’t up to scratch, maybe put it on your Christmas list. You’re bound to get at least one pair of fluffy socks too.

Once you’ve covered yourself in as many clothes as humanly possible, it’s also a good idea to keep active to boost your circulation. Try moving around at least once an hour, even indoors. Maybe just wander to the kitchen to make another cup of tea.

Stop Drafts

Another practical but essential tip for keeping warm this winter is to make sure your house is well insulated. Not that we’re suggesting you start a huge insulation project in your loft, or double glaze your windows right now. There are a lot of cheap tricks that can keep the heat in, from closing all your doors, to buying thermal linings for your curtains.

You can also check to see if you’re entitled to any financial aid when it comes to heating costs. Those aged over 65 may be eligible for up to £300 this winter to help pay their heating bills. This is known as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’. The Energy Saving Trust can also point you in the direction of any support available, and help you reduce your heating costs.

Check The Heat

Presumably you’ll have turned the heating on already, but if not, make sure that your heating system still works! It may be sensible to have it checked over by a professional too, to see if there are any problems that could arise in the coming months. The festive season is always expensive, so don’t get caught out by costs like replacing your boiler if you can help it.

It’s recommended that you try to maintain the temperature at around 20°C in the areas you spend a lot of time, like your living room. You can also invest in hot water bottles and electric blankets – you can get an electric blanket for a double bed for as little as £16.40 on Amazon.

Heartwarming Food

Start warming yourself from the inside out. BBC Good Food has tons of recipes for casseroles and other meals that are sure to give you a rosy glow.

It’s also good to focus on the fact we’ll almost certainly have a white Christmas this year! You can use this opportunity to take some picturesque photos. You could even use the pictures on your Christmas cards, for a personal touch.
