20 Last Minute Cheap Halloween Costumes
Posted in

Not got yourself sorted for Halloween yet? If you’re going to (or throwing) a costume party, you’ll need a fantastic outfit to make the hoards of spooky folk running around hideously jealous. You may also to need to dress up the kids for trick-or-treating. If you need to source a last minute costume, but don’t have time to go searching or wait for it to be delivered, there are loads of cheap ways to do it. Even if you aren’t that creative, you can still look fantastic, and fool your friends into thinking you’ve spent weeks on the idea. To help you get started, we’ve made a list of 20 easy costumes to make or buy!

Rosie the Riveter

Dressing up as a symbol for feminism will certainly make a statement. You’ll need high-waisted jeans, a denim or blue shirt and a red bandanna to tie around your head. Simple but effective.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle

For this costume, you can be as creative as you like. The most basic version will require a green outfit, a brightly coloured mask (you’ll need to match it to your favourite turtle), and a green spray-painted aluminium roasting pan.

Scooby Doo Character

If you have an entirely orange wardrobe, dressing up as Velma will come naturally. If not, you just need to buy an orange polo neck, skirt and socks. And don’t forget the trademark glasses! Shaggy is even easier – you just need to get hold of a green top and brown trousers.

Frida Kahlo

You don’t need to be as artistic as Frida Kahlo to pull this costume off. If you have brightly patterned clothes, a shawl and some colourful jewellery, you just need to add some flowers in your hair and a bit of eyebrow pencil.

Domino

Who doesn’t have a black top and trousers in their wardrobe? Just add white spots and a white line over your hips, and you have become a domino.

Minnie Mouse

You can either make or buy the iconic ears and bow, and then you’ll only need a black top and tights and a red skirt. If possible, add a few spots to the skirt, and you’re ready to impress every Mickey you meet!

Ghost

It’s a classic for a reason. Perhaps the easiest Halloween costume, all you need is a bed sheet and a pair of scissors. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even add some make-up to the sheet, or perhaps use a green bed sheet to become a zombie ghost.

Viking

There are so many directions to take this costume, depending on how extravagant you are looking to be! You can make or buy a helmet, and if you can find some brown carpet or faux fur, you can add embellishments.

Vampire Bat

This is a really effective costume that is so simple. Just dress in black from head to toe, and then cut up a black umbrella for wings. Paint on some fangs for a scarier look.

Bunch of Grapes

For this costume, you’ll only need a load of purple balloons and some way of sticking them to yourself. You can also add leaves to complete the look. It’s also the perfect excuse to drink only wine all night!

Hobbit

This costume is perfect for both adults and kids – they’ll look precious. You just need to track down brown trousers (and cut off the ends), a waistcoat if possible, a white shirt and a green cloak. Just don’t leave the one ring at home, in case the forces of Sauron are on the hunt for it.

Audrey Hepburn

Few women don’t have a black dress in their wardrobe. To dress as Audrey Hepburn’s iconic character in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, simply add black gloves, a pearl necklace and a cigarette holder.

Skeleton

There are a lot of costumes that require a black outfit, and this is yet another. The only thing you need to finish this look is add face paint.

Crazy Cat Lady

This is a particularly good costume for children, as they’ll probably already have toy cats standing by. Just add a dressing gown and maybe some rollers in their hair, and you’re done!

Pineapple

A yellow dress is the main component to this costume. You then only need to sort out the spiky green bit for your head. You can use a headband and felt or paper, or even cut off the top of a pineapple and find a way to make it stay…

Mime

Ideally, you’ll already own a black and white striped t-shirt for this costume, but you can also get away with wearing all black. White gloves would look great, but they’re not necessary. The most important thing is the white face-paint and black diamonds over your eyes.

Instagram Photo

For this costume, you need cardboard, and access to a printer. Just make a frame from the cardboard big enough for your face to fit inside, and add a printed Instagram frame.

Mary Poppins

Do you own a black umbrella and a white shirt? If so, you’re practically there! Add a black skirt, a red bowtie and the black hat with a few flowers. Practically perfect in every way!

Lego

This is a slightly more creative costume, though not difficult. You will need a cardboard box, and some round tupperware or paper bowls. Then just choose the colour of your lego, and paint the whole thing. You’ll be the coolest kid on the block.

Greek God or Goddess

If you have a white dress or bed sheet, this is one of the simplest costumes to put together. Just add some gold jewellery, and a gold rope or ribbon for a belt, and you can encourage people to worship you all night.
